Dear Readers,
Polina’s Bear Cubs is set in Kamchatka, Eastern Russia during World War 2. The Kamchatka Peninsula is bordered by 2 seas i.e.
The Bering Sea to the east and the Sea of Okhotsk to the west. It is aptly named the ‘’Land of Fire and Ice’’,
and has more earthquakes ,landslides and volcanic eruptions than anywhere else in the world. It is very sparsely populated and is home to incredible wildlife.
Polina has been left to run the family farm as her father and brother have joined the army to fight the Germans. Polina’s mother died many years ago.One day she is bathing in one of the many mud pools close to her farm when a huge bear walks towards her.She bravely says hello to her. They become good friends and Lucky frequently visits her farm with her 4 cubs.
When the Japanese army invade Kamchatka, Polina is forced to flee north with her animals. Lucky is killed by the soldiers and Polina looks after the 4 bear cubs. She meets a family of gypsies along the way and fights the soldiers narrowly escaping several times. She becomes very famous and Stalin wants to meet her but even his agents fail to catch her.
